Veel patiënten ontvangen niet de best mogelijke zorg; verbeteringen in de klinische praktijk zijn nodig om dit wel te bewerkstelligen.

Er zijn veel zeer uiteenlopende benaderingen van invoering van verbeteringen in de patiëntenzorg; deze zijn gebaseerd op verschillende ideeën over menselijk gedrag en het functioneren van organisaties.
-
Een combinatie van top-down- en bottom-upbenaderingen is vaak nodig om echte verandering in de praktijk te realiseren.
