Samenvatting

Het bewijs dat bisfosfonaten een gunstig effect hebben op de morbiditeit door skeletmetastasen van prostaatcarcinoom, is duidelijk toegenomen. Recent is bij (gemetastaseerd) prostaatcarcinoom voor het eerst na een langere follow-up ook een effect van bisfosfonaten (clodronaat) op de mortaliteit aangetoond. De effectiviteit van bisfosfonaten bij de behandeling van botontkalking en preventie van osteoporose is duidelijk. In hoeverre bisfosfonaten, door ze bij aanvang van de hormonale therapie in te zetten, botmetastasen kunnen voorkomen is nog onduidelijk.
