Samenvatting

De bipolaire stoornis wordt doorgaans beschouwd als een van de meest biologische en grotendeels genetisch verankerde psychiatrische aandoeningen, waarop dan ook vaak het ziektemodel wordt toegepast. Dit is onder meer gebaseerd op het gegeven dat de bipolaire stoornis in hogere mate familiair belast lijkt dan de unipolaire depressie (Levinson, 2008; Belmaker & Agam, 2008), maar ook op het opvallende contrast tussen de toestand van de patiënt tijdens een manische of depressieve episode en zijn normale functioneren, en op de vaak abrupte overgangen tussen deze toestanden.
