Dementie is een veelvoorkomende aandoening onder ouderen. Uit recent bevolkingsonderzoek blijkt dat in Nederland ongeveer 160.000 ouderen van 55 jaar en ouder lijden aan dementie (Ott et al., 1996). De prevalentie neemt exponentieel toe met de leeftijd, variërend van 4 procent onder ouderen ≥ 55 jaar, tot 32 procent onder ouderen ≥ 85 jaar. De meest voorkomende oorzaak is de ziekte van Alzheimer (72 procent), die nog steeds niet te behandelen is. …
