Summary

ibd is characterised by chronic inflammation of the digestive tract that results from uncontrolled activation of the mucosal immune system by components of the luminal microflora. Genetic factors such as a mutation in the gene encoding for the intracellular pattern recognition molecule nod2 are associated with Crohn's disease. Aberrant immune responses of the intestinal epithelium and mucosal T cells are crucial to the pathogenesis of ibd and are the basis for (future) therapeutic interventions.
