Samenvatting

Kunnen mensen verslaafd aan eten zijn? Hoewel psychiaters en psychologen tal van verslavingen en eetstoornissen onderscheiden, hoort eetverslaving daar niet bij. Toch vinden veel mensen dat eetverslaving wel bestaat, en ook sommige wetenschappers zijn die mening toegedaan: het aantal wetenschappelijke artikelen over ‘food addiction’ is de afgelopen jaren flink toegenomen. Eetverslaving kan voortvloeien uit leerprocessen en lijkt te worden gefaciliteerd door een impulsieve persoonlijkheid en een specifieke genetische predispositie. Eetverslaving gaat vaak samen met obesitas en de eetbuistoornis. De behandeling van eetverslaving lijkt redelijk succesvol als het gaat om de reductie van het overeten, maar gewichtsverlies is moeilijk, vooral op de lange termijn. In dit artikel de stand van zaken.
