Samenvatting

Uitkomstonderzoek benadrukt het belang van de therapeutische alliantie voor de uitkomst van de therapie. Meta-analyses laten zien dat de therapeutische alliantie bij gezinstherapie zelfs nog belangrijker is dan bij individuele therapie. Bij gezinstherapie is de alliantie echter complexer dan bij individuele therapie. Door empathie, authenticiteit en het bieden van hoop kan de therapeut bijdragen aan een effectieve alliantie. Tijdens de sessie kan een therapeut soms sterke emoties ervaren die op gespannen voet staan met zijn of haar therapeutische ambities op het vlak van empathisch luisteren, authenticiteit en het bieden van hoop. Een therapeut kan verveling in plaats van nieuwsgierigheid ervaren, irritatie in plaats van acceptatie, schaamte in plaats van authenticiteit. Er is emotieregulatie nodig om de alliantie te beschermen. Bovendien kunnen emoties bij de therapeut, zoals sommige auteurs aangeven – zelfs de emoties die op het eerste gezicht schadelijk lijken voor de alliantie – voor de therapeut ook nuttig zijn. Verscheidene casussen laten de verschillende manieren zien waarop gezinstherapeuten tijdens de sessie met hun eigen emoties kunnen omgaan.
