Berger raises some perceptive, subtle and fascinating issues concerning P values during his query of our caution over the interpretation of P values. When testing a single baseline characteristic, we expect one in 20 of all trials to show a significant difference (P < 0.05) purely by chance; such is the meaning of type II error. This increases with each baseline characteristic evaluated. For those approximately 5% or greater of trials with P < 0.05, should we suggest that there has been a violation of the randomisation, and that the trial is faulty? Fortunately, most people would never dream of making such accusations of their trialist colleagues. …
