9. Mindfulness en mentaal welzijn

Samenvatting

Mindfulnesstraining heeft niet alleen gunstige effecten op pijn, maar ook op het mentale functioneren en emotionele welzijn van de patiënt. Dit zijn weliswaar niet primaire doelen binnen de fysiotherapie, maar ze zijn vanuit biopsychosociaal perspectief wel onmisbaar voor de behandeling van diverse patiëntengroepen. Door mindfulness neemt de kwaliteit van zowel het wakende als het slapende leven van de patiënt toe. Mindfulnesstraining ondersteunt de cognitieve vermogens die nodig zijn voor de zelfregulatie van de patiënt rond zijn gezondheidsprobleem. Fouten, bijvoorbeeld in bewegen, worden eerder herkend en bijgestuurd, terwijl de patiënt er minder emotioneel op reageert. Sowieso neemt door mindfulnesstraining de emotieregulatie toe, wat erg gunstig is bij stressgerelateerde gezondheidsproblematiek. Door mindfulnesstraining leert de patiënt ook zichzelf minder te identificeren als pijnpatiënt. Een aantal effecten zijn ook met korte mindfulnessinterventies te bereiken.
