Inleiding Zwangere vrouwen moeten een geïnformeerde keuze kunnen maken over eventuele deelname aan prenatale screening. Een geïnformeerde keuze is gebaseerd op voldoende relevante informatie over het onderzoek, en past bij de eigen waarden ten opzichte van prenatale screening.
Opzet De onderzoeksvragen waren: 1. Hoeveel zwangere vrouwen maken een geïnformeerde keuze over prenatale screening? 2. Wat zijn de psychische effecten van geïnformeerde besluitvorming?
Methode De onderzoeksgroep bestond uit 1159 zwangere vrouwen die een prenatale screeningstest aangeboden kregen. Met vragenlijsten verzamelden we informatie over een reeks variabelen: kennisniveau, attitude, screeningsdeelname, innerlijke conflicten, tevredenheid over de beslissing en angstgevoelens.
Resultaat Een groot deel van de deelnemers, 83%, had voldoende kennis over prenatale screening. Bij 82% van de vrouwen paste de keuze bij hun eigen visie op prenatale screening en 68% van de vrouwen voldeed aan beide criteria: zij maakten een geïnformeerde keuze. Geïnformeerde besluitvorming was geassocieerd met meer tevredenheid over de beslissing, minder innerlijke conflicten over de beslissing (dit gold alleen voor de vrouwen die voor een test hadden gekozen), en niet met minder angst. Hoewel het percentage geïnformeerde keuzes relatief hoog is, was er een substantiële groep vrouwen met onvoldoende kennis of die geen consistente keuze maakte. Conclusie Dit onderzoek onderstreept het belang van geïnformeerde besluitvorming over prenatale screening.
