Since a few months, The Netherlands has a new government. Public health and health care were placed on the policy agenda with new enthusiasm. This first ‘Spectrum’ of the year, will look into the plans written down in the coalition agreement called ‘Freedom and responsibility’. The first sentence of this agreement is ‘The cabinet combines realism about the problems of today with optimism about the future’. What this means for public health and health care is elaborated in chapter five of this coalition agreement. The name of this chapter is ‘health’. Its contents however almost only relate to health care. The problems of today, according to our government, are ‘that the costs increase faster than the quality of care’ and ‘the threat of enormous shortages in the labour force’. The optimism shows from the effects the cabinet expects from better health care, while the costs can be kept under control. To what extent this is possible and what this means for primary care, care for the elderly, mental health care and public health is the subject of this ‘Spectrum’. …
