Samenvatting

Momenteel dreigen de gedragswetenschappen gedomineerd te worden door biologisch georiënteerd onderzoek. Door een te eenzijdige nadruk op de biologische (waaronder genetische) achtergronden van gedrag kan echter de situatie ontstaan dat er te weinig aandacht is voor de rol van de omgeving. In dit artikel wordt ingegaan op de interacties tussen persoon en omgeving. Belangrijke elementen van deze persoon-omgeving interacties worden besproken: de persoonlijkheid van een kind, de manier waarop persoonlijkheid en de sociale omgevingen van het kind samenwerken in het vormgeven van de ontwikkeling, en de systeemkenmerken van de omgeving. Deze bespreking leidt tot conclusies die consequenties voor het denken over preventie en interventie hebben.
