Samenvatting

Obesitas is een chronische multifactoriële ziekte. De hoeksteen van de behandeling van overgewicht en obesitas is een gezonde leefstijl. Door biologische tegenreacties van het lichaam is blijvend fors gewichtsverlies bereiken met leefstijlveranderingen bij mensen met obesitas op de langere termijn moeizaam en vergt dat levenslang veel extra inspanning. Dit toont des te meer hoe belangrijk preventie van overgewicht en obesitas is. Dit laatste is voor een belangrijk deel ook een maatschappelijk aan te pakken kwestie. In dit hoofdstuk wordt ingegaan op de oorzaken van overgewicht, het gewichtsgerelateerde gezondheidsrisico, de factoren die overgewicht in stand houden en de multidisciplinaire behandeling van overgewicht en obesitas.
