Valincidenten vormen globaal de derde oorzaak van chronische invaliditeit bij ouderen vanaf 65 jaar volgens de gegevens van de WHO.1Circa 30% van de ouderen valt ten minste eenmaal per jaar en 15% zelfs tweemaal of vaker.2,3Circa 68% van alle valpartijen leidt tot een verwonding en 5% tot een fractuur.4,5Ongeveer een kwart van degenen die vallen, doet naar aanleiding van de val een beroep op de huisarts of het ziekenhuis.4,5Onderzoek heeft uitgewezen dat ruim de helft van alle vijfenzestigplussers valangst ontwikkelt,6en dat dit soms leidt tot het vermijden van activiteiten en daardoor verminderde mobiliteit en eenzaamheid.7
