Samenvatting

Spanningshoofdpijn wordt gekenmerkt door de aanwezigheid van een als drukkend of klemmend ervaren pijn rondom de schedel (een ‘bandgevoel om het hoofd’). In tegenstelling tot migraine is er meestal geen misselijkheid en braken.1 In het classificatiesysteem van de International Headache Society (IHS) wordt de term ‘tension-type headache’ gebruikt.2 Letterlijk vertaald zou dit ‘spanningsachtige hoofdpijn’ betekenen, maar in het Nederlands is dat een onbruikbaar begrip, vandaar dat de term spanningshoofdpijn gangbaar blijft.
