Pijn is een van de meest voorkomende problemen in de palliatieve fase. Het lijden aan de pijn wordt door veel factoren beïnvloed. Naast – vaak meerdere – lichamelijke oorzaken spelen psychische, sociale en spirituele aspecten een rol bij de beleving van pijn. Pijn vraagt daarom om een brede aanpak. In dit artikel gaan wij in op oorzaken en behandeling van pijn, waarbij het uitgangspunt steeds is de pijn voor de patiënt zo goed mogelijk te verlichten. Wanneer een oorzakelijke behandeling geen optie is, kan men met de huidige palliatieve mogelijkheden en met een multidisciplinaire aanpak in de meeste gevallen een goede kwaliteit van leven bereiken.
