Samenvatting

Wanneer en waar bent u geboren? Waarschijnlijk hoeft u over het antwoord niet lang na te denken: het gaat om feiten die u gewoon weet. Denkt u nu eens terug aan de laatste keer dat u op het strand was. De kans is groot dat de ervaring die u daarbij hebt rijker is dan die bij het denken aan uw geboortedatum en -plaats. Als u terugdenkt aan die laatste keer op het strand en uw ogen sluit dan ziet u misschien de schimmen van meeuwen scheren over de zee, hoort u de echo van hun gekrijs en van het breken van de golven, voelt u bijna hoe de wind aan uw jas rukt of juist hoe de zon op uw huid brandt. Terwijl u deze indrukken herbeleeft, bent u zich er terdege van bewust dat ze tot uw verleden behoren. Uw geest reist als het ware terug in de tijd. Deze ervaring is wat de meeste mensen verstaan onder herinneren.
