Samenvatting

Aandachtsproblemen, impulsiviteit en hyperactiviteit zijn kenmerken die veel voorkomen in de kindertijd. Worden de gedragingen hardnekkig en hebben ze invloed op het dagelijks functioneren, dan kan er sprake zijn van ADHD. De classificatie ADHD is de naam voor de gedragingen, het is dus niet de oorzaak van het gedrag. Voor de prevalentie van ADHD bij kinderen en jongeren zien we een gemiddeld percentage van 5,3, waarbij ADHD vaker bij jongens dan bij meisjes wordt geclassificeerd. Daarnaast tonen onderzoeken aan dat er bij het stellen van de classificatie ADHD vaak sprake is van comorbiditeit. Er bestaan grote verschillen in deze populatie wanneer het gaat om de presentatie van ADHD, de etiologie, gevolgen en perspectieven. Het geven van psycho-educatie over ADHD kan bij ouders zorgen voor opluchting en uiteindelijk leiden tot een betere kwaliteit van leven bij het kind.
