Bewusteloos? Automatische en gecontroleerde processen in relatie tot alcoholgebruik bij jongeren

Samenvatting

De afgelopen jaren is er in de psychologie steeds meer aandacht voor automatische processen die menselijk gedrag kunnen verklaren. Waar eerder werd verondersteld dat menselijk gedrag het gevolg is van een bewuste overweging van de voor- en nadelen ervan, wordt er tegenwoordig steeds meer gewicht toegekend aan de invloed van onbewuste of automatische processen op gedrag. Deze nieuwe ontwikkelingen vinden ook weerklank in het onderzoek op het gebied van (alcohol)verslaving. Het meeste onderzoek dat tot nu toe gedaan is, is gericht op alcoholgebruik bij volwassenen. Inmiddels zijn er aanwijzingen dat deze processen ook belangrijk kunnen zijn in het verklaren van alcoholgebruik van jongeren. Dit artikel gaat in op de vraag of kennis over de rol van automatische en gecontroleerde processen in het ontstaan van overmatig drankgebruik kan helpen bij het verklaren waarom de ene jongere wel te veel gaat drinken en de andere niet.
