Authors Ryan, Hunter, and Murrie have edited a comprehensive primer for the treatment of juvenile sex offenders. In addition to providing an engaging review of relevant research, Juvenile Sex Offenders: A Guide to Evaluation and Treatment for Mental Health Professionals highlights and explains the schism between how the legal and psychiatric spheres understand deviant sexual behavior among youth. Further, the work calls for progressive and optimistic reform based not only on a thorough and objective analysis of research in the field but also on a nuanced understanding of the individualized nature of the intersection of adolescence and the law. By building on traditional conceptions of children as distinguishable from adults, this text successfully informs and defends reforms of misapplied and ineffective standardized sentencing and treatment. …
