Samenvatting

Naast de cognitieve stoornissen die bij dementie optreden en die beschouwd kunnen worden als directe gevolgen van hersendegeneratie, zien we bij dementerende mensen vrijwel altijd ook andere ontregelingen in het psychisch functioneren en het gedrag. Voorbeelden hiervan zijn: depressief en angstig gedrag, agitatie, dwaalgedrag, achterdocht, wanen en hallucinaties.
In het verleden werden deze ontregelingen als min of meer directe gevolgen van hersendegeneratie beschouwd. Tegenwoordig overheerst de opvatting dat, naast organische factoren, psychologische en sociale factoren een belangrijke rol kunnen spelen bij de verstoring van het evenwicht.
