The act (or art) of measurement is a foundation of evidence-based, precision medicine and public health. How to build a scientific knowledge base, provide the best possible tailored care for patients, and safeguard population health without conducting suitable measurements? Measurement is everything. And measurements should ideally be of the highest quality. More often than not, however, measurement quality may be taken for granted in scientific research and clinical or public health practice. Although perfect measurements virtually do not exist, especially in case of abstract, unobservable constructs like quality of life, one must always aspire to select and apply the best available measurement instruments that are fit for purpose. That is, fitting the population, context, and aim of application. …
