Samenvatting

Overgewicht bij kinderen is een frequent voorkomend probleem, met een prevalentie van 15,2% in Nederland. Een verstoring van de energiebalans, een relatief hoge energie-inname en/of een relatief laag energiegebruik veroorzaken het ontstaan van overgewicht. Om overgewicht bij kinderen vast te kunnen stellen, dient de body-mass index (gewicht in kg/(lengte in m)2) te worden berekend. Meting van de buikomtrek of de huidplooien geeft meer informatie over de lichaamssamenstelling. Het risico op complicaties van overgewicht is met name afhankelijk van de lichaamssamenstelling. Risicofactoren die de kans op het krijgen van overgewicht kunnen vergroten, kunnen zowel genetische (bijvoorbeeld overgewicht van ouders) als omgevingsfactoren (bijvoorbeeld snelle groei in eerste levensjaar en weinig lichamelijke activiteit) zijn.
