De cognitieve vermogens van een persoon zijn primair afhankelijk van de hersenschors (zie figuur 1). Deze bevat zo'n 22 miljard neuronen (Pakkenberg & Gundersen, 1997), die elk met duizenden andere zenuwcellen synaptische verbindingen maken, in totaal zo'n 200 biljoen. De verbindingen tussen de zenuwcellen zijn cruciaal voor de verwerking van informatie in de hersenschors. Zij bepalen welke zenuwcellen en hersenschorsgebieden wel of niet met elkaar kunnen communiceren en daarmee de flow van de informatie.
