Naar een narratief perspectief op ouder worden, identiteit, en het leven van alledag

Samenvatting

Al 25 jaar ben ik gefascineerd door verhalen. Tijdens mijn afwisselende loopbaan als predikant, docent in het volwassenenonderwijs, leraar Engels, en nu gerontoloog, ben ik onder de indruk geraakt van het verklarend vermogen van de narrative root metaphor (Sarbin, 1986), ofwel het narratief als fundamentele analogie om de wereld te begrijpen. Behalve het leiden van workshops voor een breed publiek over het concept van het leven als een verhaal, geef ik ook les in Narratieve gerontologie aan een kleine liberal arts universiteit (een brede bacheloropleiding) in de Verenigde Staten. Tijdens deze activiteiten valt me telkens weer op hoe verhalen verheldering kunnen bieden, niet alleen bij de vergeten ‘innerlijke kant’ van het ouder worden – op zichzelf al een hele prestatie – maar ook bij talloze andere onderbelichte aspecten van het leven van alledag. Daarnaast valt me een eigenaardig fenomeen op.
