Corticale disconnectie, dat wil zeggen verstoring van witte stofbanen in de hersenen, wordt verondersteld een mechanisme te zijn voor leeftijdsgerelateerde afname van cognitief functioneren (Meier-Ruge, Ulrich, Bruhlmann & Meier, 1992).
